Chief Executive - Greensboro Urban Ministry

The Organization: The mission of Greensboro Urban Ministry (GUM) is to express the love of God to our neighbors in need by offering food, shelter, and solutions. The vision of GUM is to provide stable lives for our neighbors. We provide opportunities for housing solutions, safe shelter, food, and supportive services year-round for residents of the greater Greensboro community. Founded in 1967, Greensboro Urban Ministry is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving Guilford County, North Carolina. GUM has an established leadership team, a staff of 65, robust volunteer support, a healthy balance sheet, and a budget of $5+ million.

The Opportunity: The Board of Directors of GUM is seeking the next chief executive of the organization. The next chief executive will be an experienced leader of faith with a deep commitment to the mission of providing basic services to people in need. Our next leader will:

Essential Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Provide direction and relevant information to the Board in order to develop a clear strategic direction and plan of action and lead the implementation of the plan.

  • Lead a senior leadership team and support the professional development and career advancement of all team members.

  • Advance the organization’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, building an internal culture of inclusivity.

  • Stay abreast of trends, innovations, and new models related to housing and food insecurity, and work with the Board to consider their application to the strategic direction of the organization.

External Relations

  • Serve as the face of the organization, make presentations, build relationships with organizations that serve historically marginalized communities, work with local government partners, and serve on community committees and task forces.

  • Articulate GUM’s value proposition in the community by educating key stakeholders on the role of GUM in the housing and food insecurity spaces.

  • Develop, expand, and maintain relationships with philanthropic, faith, and community leaders and major donors, and make direct financial requests.

Operations

  • Ensure the organization is structured to best meet the needs of the community.

  • Manage the overall financial health and fundraising strategy of the organization and align GUM resources to meet community needs.

  • Develop an annual organizational budget for Board approval; and, within budget, manage and align spending with the organization’s strategic priorities.

  • Oversee day-to-day operations in accordance with the policies established by the Board.

Essential Requirements:

  • Experience as a leader of faith, a passion for GUM’s mission, and a commitment to servant leadership.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.

  • Transparent and high integrity leadership.

  • 10 or more years of nonprofit senior management experience, with the demonstrated ability to effectively lead in a diverse faith-based organizational context preferred.

  • Ability to effectively convey a vision of GUM’s strategic future to staff, board, volunteers, and donors.

  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of fundraising strategies and the cultivation of donor relations in the nonprofit sector.

  • Solid budget management skills, including oversight of budget preparation, analysis, decision-making, and reporting.

  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation.

  • Ability to interface, engage, and build relationships with diverse faith communities, volunteers, and donor groups.
