THE ORGANIZATION
The NACD Research Triangle Chapter is one of 20+ chapters of the National Association of Corporate Directors, which has more than 40-year legacy of setting the standard for responsible board leadership. NACD aspires to a world where corporate directors are recognized by all stakeholders as trusted stewards of long-term value creation. The association, which has more than 23,000 members, elevates board performance by providing board members with practical insights through world-class education, leading-edge research, and an ever-growing network of directors.
The NACD Research Triangle Chapter advances exemplary board leadership—for directors, by directors—by providing directors with a local forum to address governance challenges and explore leading boardroom practices. Our 400+ members are directors for a range of industries: life sciences, healthcare, technology, and manufacturing. The Research Triangle Chapter serves its members through educational programs that feature the latest insights and intelligence on critical boardroom issues and networking events that promote peer-to-peer connections.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The NACD Research Triangle Chapter Board of Directors seeks a part-time (approximately 30 hours per week) Executive Director to lead program development and execution; provide strategic support and guidance to the Board of Directors; serve as a liaison to sponsors, members, NACD National, and community partners; and oversee chapter operations. The Executive Director will hire and oversee contractors that support event planning, marketing, and administrative support. This leader will play a key role in the organization’s evolution and growth.
ESSENTIAL WORK RESPONSIBILITIES
Programs
The chapter currently offers between 14 and 18 programs per year. The programs, which provide members with educational content and networking opportunities, fall into three categories: Leading from the Boardroom (full-day), Director Imperatives (half-day), and Sponsor-led Roundtable (one hour in-person or virtual). The Executive Director is responsible for leading and driving all programs, which involves
Partnering with the Board’s Programs Chair and Fundraising & Sponsorship Chair on program content and schedule
Leveraging network to work closely with Programs Chair to identify and confirm program speakers. In cases where Board makes a connection, play a key role in working with identified speaker
Identifying and securing venues that meet the needs of program, speakers, and members
Creating program description and run of show and modifying based on committee feedback; ensuring program fidelity to original vision
Managing the efforts of any contract staff which may include
Marketing contractor for the creation of marketing and promotional materials
Chapter admin to manage registration of all attendees (members, non-members, guests)
Event planner to coordinate all on-site aspects of the event
Board Engagement
The Board’s current standing committees are Programs, Fundraising & Sponsorship, Member Engagement, Finance, and Nominating/Governance. Each committee meets at least once per quarter. In this leadership position, the Executive Director makes recommendations to the board and carries out the Board’s strategic priorities in the day-to-day work of the chapter. Board engagement responsibilities include:
Working with each committee chair to set strategy and goals of each committee and setting schedules and agendas that ensure goals are met
Facilitating Finance Committee preparation for quarterly budget review, coordinating and participating in meetings with contract chapter admin and Treasurer
Supporting the Member Engagement Committee with data collection and recommendations for strategies to sustain increase chapter membership
Planning and executing quarterly board meetings, which includes setting agenda, overseeing logistics, and preparing an Executive Director’s report
Assisting with board development strategy, providing input as needed
Sponsorships
Sponsors provide an essential revenue stream for chapter programming and create networking opportunities for our members. The Executive Director owns the ongoing relationship development and communication with sponsors; responsibilities include
Advising the Board on sponsorship strategy, which includes sponsorship levels, targets, and benefits
Working with Sponsorship Committee to engage the Board in the lifecycle of sponsorship
Ensuring strong alignment between the Sponsorship and Programs Committees
Maintaining ongoing contact with current and potential annual and program sponsors
Marketing & Communications
The chapter works closely with National NACD on chapter marketing and communications strategy and collateral while also disseminating chapter-specific communications on programming. Responsibilities include:
Working with Programs Chair to draft program descriptions; publicizing via direct communications to members as well social media channels
Coordinating with and leveraging National NACD on member and non-member communications
Engaging and supervising a marketing contractor as needed
Liaison to NACD National & Community Partners
The Executive Director is the chapter’s liaison to National NACD as well as key community partners. These responsibilities include
Participating in regularly held National NACD calls
Attending National NACD events
Developing, in partnership with the chapter committee chairs, the annual Chapter Success Roadmap goals and monitoring performance against those goals on a quarterly basis
Serving as the primary point of contact and relationship manager for community partners that range from associations to corporations to affinity groups
Chapter Administration
The Executive Director is responsible for the overall chapter administration, including budget monitoring and oversight, creating and overseeing an ideal administrative support structure, and event and programming logistics. These functions are largely carried out through contractors that support administrative and back-office functions, providing webinar support, in coordination with NACD National overseeing a content management system for a website, supporting event promotion and logistics, and communicating with members.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
The ideal candidate will bring with them a strong network in the community of board directors, C-suite executives, and service providers along with the ability to tap these resources for our programs and sponsorships. In addition, we are looking for candidates with the following experience and skills:
Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage the development of multiple programs that are dependent on coordinating with Board members, speakers, sponsors, contractors, venues, and partners, all within very specific timelines.
Experience managing contract employees across multiple projects
High level of comfort and experience interacting with highly experienced professionals, i.e., C-suite leaders.
Ability to think broadly and strategically about the vision and mission of the chapter with an eye towards increasing member and sponsor engagement
POSITION DETAILS
While this position is remote, the Executive Director should be based in the Research Triangle area, allowing them to plan for and attend in-person meetings, programming, and events based in the region.
Part Time: averaging 30 hours per week.
Hiring Range: $80,000-$90,000
